We are often asked the meaning of the word Erinaceous.
If you look it up, you'll find 'Like or pertaining to a hedgehog' is the dictionary definition of the word erinaceous. Is this a reference to how spikily we defend our clients' interests, or how indigestible we are to predators? Or is it a reference to the business management theory called the 'hedgehog concept'? The 'hedgehog concept' is based on Isaiah Berlin's essay, 'The Hedgehog and the Fox' and says that you have a clear understanding of what you can be best in the world at, what drives your economic engine and what you are deeply passionate about - and it makes companies great. Erinaceous and the hedgehog concept were made for each other.
We'd like to say that we had heard of the hedgehog concept before naming the group, but the answer to the question, "Why Erinaceous?" is none of the above. It was the project name we used to plan what the group would look like and what services it would offer, chosen because the founders have always liked hedgehogs.
